Deborah Dendler Featured In Landau Gallery

Newton, MA - January 1st, 2017

"For the next month, the Landau Gallery will be featuring a variety of drawings and sculptures created by Deborah Dendler, a local artist. Some of her most fascinating works are her relief sculptures. Relief sculpting is the process in which the artist carves out sculpted parts while still leaving the sculpture attached to a background from which it has been carved. Her works are very complex and typically shallow, which makes the process of drawing and sculpting significantly more difficult. As a sculptor, her drawings are produced differently than those of a drawer. The artist says that, while a drawer is concerned foreshortening and perspective, a sculptor like herself uses drawings as blueprints for a sculpture. She goes on to say that she believes a good drawing for her is anything she can turn into a good sculpture. Most of her drawings are done in red and white chalk on tinted pap...

Deborah Dendler Studio Featured In Art Ascent Art And Literary Magazine

Newton, MA - April 4th, 2016

Deborah Dendler is featured in the Studio Spotlight section of ArtAscent Art Magazine, April/May, 2016. Dendler says, "For years my studio was a closet, which severely limited what I could sculpt. Then in 1987, I found a listing in the local paper for a house for sale for $1 to anyone who could remove it from downtown Main Street. I decided it would be the perfect studio, found a building mover who successfully moved the one story house. It was the best dollar I ever spent. For more than thirty years, Ive used one room as my showroom/gallery and one room as the casting room. The former living/dining room is my main work area, filled with sculpture stands, a kiln, drying racks, shelves and lots of sculptures. A set of double doors opens onto a newly installed deck, so that trucks with heavy deliveries can back up right to the door and unload, for example, a ton of clay..." Deborah Dendler Featured In Door County Living Magazine

Newton, MA - October 27th, 2015

"A Sculptor's Life" "Dendler's sketches are more than just lines on paper. There is a humanness to them, perhaps only achieved because the subject was oblivious to being the center of Dendler's world for the few moments it took to immortalize the scene on paper... Sometimes these sketches find their way into Dendler's studio and become a permanent three-dimensional sculpture...These sculptures are more than lumps of clay, porcelain and bronze shaped to represent her observations of human and animal life the past forty years. For Dendler, they are her way of heIping the modern world retain the human elements of life. These sculptures of mothers and their children, napping chefs and poised dancers are her answer to the question, 'What does it mean to be human?'
