The purple pitcher plant seen here growing in Wilmington, North Carolina is low growing, with short. stout traps, often showing Burgundy color and red veins in full sun. It turns to a deep reddish purple color in winter. It is waxy and feels hard to the touch. It tends to grow in colonies about 4 feet across. Traps will hold their color through the winter and for about 2 years. They are fragrant, early spring bloomers growing deep red blossoms on 12" scapes that flower well before the new trap develop. It is native to Wilmington and more common names are Devil's Boots, Side-Saddle Flower and the Hunter's Cup. in colonial homeopathic medicine, it was believed to offer relief from small pox and was frequently hunted for this reason.
