Description
As I walked down Broadway (New York City), returning home from an appointment, I noticed a large, partially painted mannequin had been left on the sidewalk by a store going out of business. On an impulse, I decided it was too cool to be left for the sanitation trucks and I would take it home. The problem was that it was quite heavy and I walk with a cane. So I enlisted the help of strong young bystanders who were happy to cart the thing for me for a couple of blocks to the bus stop. A number of them (and other passers by) wanted to be photographed with it, so I obliged. In addition, they helped me pose her in a number of places and I took more pictures. Then I had help getting it on the bus, a tolerant and amused bus driver, and more helpers to get it from the bus to my elevator. The mannequin is now wearing one of my dresses and a fedora and hanging out in my living room until I decide what possessed me and what to do with it. I called all the pictures my "Mannequin Project" and put them in a computer file. This is one of them.
The metal sculpture where the mannequin is propped up is "Giant Pod" by artists Pedro Villalta and Montserrat Daubon and is located at the intersection of Riverside Drive, Broadway, and Dyckman in the Inwood section of Manhattan. It's a ten foot high minimalist sculpture that mimics seedpods found in nature.

I am fascinated with the mannequin series... wonderful texture, design and messages...can hardly wait to see who's "in the window" or out of it next !

How absolutely cool, Sarah. Now I have a visual of you walking through the NYC streets and riding the bus hauling this fine mannequin! Great idea! l/f/t

Wonderful title, image and story Sarah! Amazing how helpful New Yorkers are despite a bad knock on their reputation. Spent 25 years in that city one weekend...lol. Actually did work there for a long time and one can see it all. Even a photographer carrying a mannequin. Nice work.

What an awesome story, dear Sarah! I think with your great imagination and sense for composition we are going to see a lot of cool results involving the "Mannequin Project"!!! :)))

Fabulous story and life event! My daughter had a mannequin for several years in her LA apartment and just this move it didn't make the cut. I know she misses her! (I'll find a pic and post it). This is marvelous!! F/L++
